Macrium Reflect Restore Image: Recover Data from Backup

Restoring files and folders from a Macrium Reflect Free image is really easy. Simply follow these instructions:

1. Make sure Macrium Reflect Free is installed on your computer.

This might sound silly, but if you have just installed a fresh copy of Windows onto your computer, you won't be able to restore backed up files from your Macrium Reflect image until the program has been installed. Follow this link for help:

2. If your backup file is stored externally - for example, on a CD/DVD or USB disk - put the disc in the drive or connect the USB device.

3. Click Start > Computer, then double-click on the drive that holds your backup file. In my case it's Local Disk (E:), which is my external USB disk.

4. Find your Macrium Reflect backup file (i.e. the "image") and double-click it.

5. Tick each disk that appears in the list. There will usually only be one disk in the list.

Click on the "Drive Letter" drop-down and select a letter. It doesn't matter which letter you pick.

Tick the "Enable access to restricted folders" box.

Finally, click "OK".

6. Your backed up files should now appear automatically. If they don't, click Start > Computer and double-click on the drive that you assigned in the previous step. In my case it's Local Disk (F:).

7. You now have access to all of the files in the backup image. To restore backup data, simply copy files or folders onto your computer (e.g. drag and drop files/folders onto your desktop or into your My Documents folder).

If you want to disconnect the image, click Start > Computer and right-click the disk we assigned in Step #5. Then click "Unmount Macrium Image..."

Macrium Reflect Restore Image: Recover Whole Backup

This guide explains how to restore a whole Macrium Reflect image using a rescue disk. This is useful when you want to:

• Restore your PC to an earlier time.
• Save time setting up a new computer.

Macrium Reflect Restore Image: Step #1

To restore your computer to an earlier state your computer needs to be able to "boot" from the rescue disc you created.

This means that when your computer is switched on, it will open the software that's on your rescue CD, DVD or USB stick, instead of booting your computer's hard disk and loading the operating system that's installed on it (e.g. Windows XP).

You need to do TWO things to get your computer to boot from the rescue disk:

1. Put the rescue CD/DVD or USB stick into your computer.

2. Instruct your computer to boot from CD/DVD/USB.

Macrium Reflect Restore Image: Step #2

Once your computer has been configured to boot from CD/DVD or USB disk, we're almost ready to restore your computer from the backup. All you need to do now is:

• Double check that you have inserted your Macrium Reflect rescue disk.
• If your backup file is stored on a USB disk, connect that USB disk now.
• Restart your PC.

The following screen should appear. Wait a few seconds, and the Rescue Wizard should then load.

You'll then enter the rescue software where a wizard will greet you.

1. Click "Next".

2. Find where your backup file is stored using the file explorer in the left-hand pane. You'll need to select the disk and folder where the file is stored.

For example, my backups appear under: D: > PC Images

In the right-hand pane, click on the image you want to restore, then click "Next".

3. Select the disk partitions you want to restore by clicking the box to the left of them. Usually there will only be one partition available to restore anyway.

Then click "Next".

4. Select the hard disk which the backup image should be restored onto. Usually there will only be one option anyway.

Then click "Next".

5. If you're happy, click "Restore" and "Yes" if you're prompted. Your Macrium Reflect restore image process will now begin.

Your computer will now be completely restored to how it was at the time the backup was created.

When the restore process finishes and you reboot your computer, it should be exactly as it once was.
